🇺🇸🍔 4th of July Sourdough Recipes + My Solo Adventure

The Sourdough Slice

Serving sourdough recipes, stories, and inspiration every Saturday morning.

Hey Reader,

A few weeks ago, on a whim, I signed up for a “Weeding for Wildlife” hike at a local state park. I figured a little solo adventure might do me some good—especially since I’ve been working on rediscovering what makes me feel like me again.

You see, I’ve been doing my best to stay busy lately—getting outside, building my confidence back up, and learning how to enjoy my own company again after the recent end of a nearly 10-year relationship with my fiancé.

I haven’t shared that here yet, but this felt like the right moment.

So, me and a small group of strangers spent the afternoon pulling up invasive garlic mustard—a plant that outcompetes native species that butterflies, hummingbirds, and other wildlife rely on. It was way more fun and educational than I expected, and I’ll definitely do it again soon.

Honestly, there was something kind of symbolic about weeding out that invasive plant, like making space for new growth in my own life. 🌱

After that day, I came home feeling lighter—and, of course, hungry! It got me thinking about all the summery sourdough recipes I’ve been loving lately, so I pulled together a whole roundup just in time for the 4th of July. ☀️🇺🇸

In this collection, you’ll find:

  • Sourdough bruschetta
  • Sourdough hamburger and hot dog buns
  • Sourdough graham crackers for s’mores
  • Sourdough strawberry shortcake
  • So much more

Whether you’re hosting, heading to a cookout, or just looking for something seasonal to bake, I hope you enjoy these recipes as much as I do.

P.S. If you’ve been loving my sourdough recipes, I’d be so grateful if you pinned a few to your recipe board on Pinterest. It helps more people find them - and start their own sourdough adventures too! 💛

To help you get the best results, here are some ingredients and tools I recommend:

  • Food Scale - Measuring by weight is the easiest way to get consistent results every time.
  • Banneton - Helps support your sourdough during its final rise and gives it that classic shape.
  • Straight-Sided Proofing Container - Makes it easy to monitor your dough's rise and bulk fermentation.
  • Cast Iron Skillet - Perfect for baking crispy, golden crusts on sourdough cornbread, biscuits, and more.
  • Aluminum Baking Pans - Great for quick breads, bars, and cakes with even heat distribution.
  • Rolling Pin - Essential for rolling cracker dough and pie crust thin and even.
