🍀🍞 Sourdough Rye Bread & Irish Soda Bread for St. Patrick's Day

Hey Reader,

St. Patrick’s Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. 🍀

Growing up in New England, a New England boiled dinner was a special meal we only had once a year.

Now, I love it even more because it also means spring is just around the corner (thank goodness because I’m definitely ready to say goodbye to the cold and hello to some warmth and sunshine!).

Even my snowdrop flowers are already starting to pop up, which is always the first sign that warmer days are on the way! ☀️

I remember my first St. Patrick’s Day after getting into sourdough - I was so excited to make homemade Irish soda bread with my discard. I love how simple it is, and adding sourdough gives it a nice tang that pairs perfectly with the buttermilk. Plus, since it's a quick bread, it’s super easy to make in just under an hour!

This year, instead of soda bread, I’ll be pairing my new sourdough rye bread recipe with my corned beef and cabbage. The earthy, nutty flavor of the rye with caraway seeds is perfect for soaking up that delicious boiled dinner broth. 🥬🥩

If you're looking to add sourdough to your St. Patrick’s Day meal, I’ve got you covered with three easy recipes to add a touch of sourdough to your feast. 😊

P.S. - Do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? Hit reply and let me know - I’d love to hear about your holiday traditions! 🍀

To help you get the best results, here are some ingredients and tools I recommend:

  • Dark Rye Flour - I use a locally-milled rye flour or Bob's Red Mill brand.
  • Caraway Seeds - These give rye bread its classic, distinctive flavor.
  • Lodge 6-Quart Dutch Oven - Perfect for making boiled dinner or baking sourdough rye bread.
  • Lodge Cast Iron Skillet - Ideal for baking Irish soda bread or biscuits.
  • Straight-Sided Container - A must-have for bulk fermenting sourdough rye bread with confidence.
  • Kitchen Scale - For the best results and fewer dishes, I highly recommend using a kitchen scale.
  • Parchment Paper - Lining your Dutch oven or cast iron with parchment paper prevents sticking and makes cleanup easier.
