🌹🍞 Sourdough > Flowers This Valentine’s Day

The Sourdough Slice

Serving sourdough recipes, stories, and inspiration every Saturday morning.

Hey Reader,

Do you love baking for other people as much as I do? 🥖💛

It’s honestly one of my favorite parts of being a sourdough baker. And this week? I did a lot of it.

With how cold it’s been here in New England, keeping the oven on has been my favorite way to make the house feel extra warm and cozy.

I started the week by baking six loaves of classic sourdough for an event my cousin was part of. Then a few friends put in requests for jalapeño cheddar loaves and discard chocolate chip cookies (which I can never say no to).

And on Sunday, I had my neighbors over for dinner as a thank you for helping me with snow removal during the last storm. I made sourdough chicken pot pie with a big salad, and of course, sourdough brownies for dessert.

Speaking of dessert… Valentine’s Day is right around the corner.

And honestly, I can’t think of a better way to say “I love you” than with something homemade and sourdough.

So today I’m sharing five of my favorite sourdough recipes that would be perfect for Valentine’s Day.

If you’re baking for a partner, your kids, your friends, or even just yourself, I hope you find one you love. 🍞💘

To help you get the best results, here are some ingredients and tools I recommend:

  • Food Scale - Measuring by weight is the easiest way to get consistent results every time.
  • Dutch Oven - Creates steam while baking so you get a beautiful rise and crust.
  • Straight-Sided Containers - Easier to track bulk fermentation.
  • Bread Sling - Helps you safely transfer dough into a hot Dutch oven.
  • Lame - Gives you control and confidence when scoring your dough for an even rise.
  • Aluminum Muffin Pan - Bakes muffins evenly and helps them rise tall with golden edges.
  • Paper Liners - Make cleanup easy and keep muffins from sticking to the pan.

The Sourdough Slice Serving sourdough recipes, stories, and inspiration every Saturday morning. Hey Reader, Do you usually make your sourdough loaves with bread flour or all-purpose (or something else)? In most of my recipes, I recommend bread flour by default. But recently I realized something — I had never actually done a true side-by-side comparison myself to see how much of a difference it really makes. So this week I decided to run a little experiment. I made two loaves exactly the same...

The Sourdough Slice Serving sourdough recipes, stories, and inspiration every Saturday morning. Hey Reader, I know I keep talking about the snow, but… wow. This last storm was no joke. ❄️ Here in my part of Massachusetts, we ended up with over 30 inches on top of what was already on the ground. Tuesday was basically spent shoveling myself and the chickens out. I was really grateful that I was only without power for about 36 hours. And that there wasn’t any major damage to my home. The chicken...

The Sourdough Slice Serving sourdough recipes, stories, and inspiration every Saturday morning. Hey Reader, Are you a big coffee drinker? ☕ I can’t start my mornings without a cup. I’ve been making pour over coffee in my Chemex for over 11 years now… and I finally cracked it on Wednesday. Totally my fault. I had it sitting too close to the burner. Oops! But it’s already been replaced, and I took it as a good excuse to treat myself to a brand new water kettle too. Speaking of morning drinks…...
