🍞 5 Salty & Sweet Sourdough Inclusions for Summer

The Sourdough Slice

Serving sourdough recipes, stories, and inspiration every Saturday morning.

Hey Reader,

Happy 4th of July! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ I hope you're having a fun and relaxing long weekend with friends and family.

Here in Massachusetts, we're in the middle of a heatwave. It hit 100Β°F today. As I type this, it's still 80Β°F in my bedroom πŸ₯΅

Before the heat settled in, I managed to harvest all of my shallots and even picked my first cucumbers and zucchini of the season.

My little wildflower meadow that I planted last fall is finally starting to bloom too, so I picked a handful and put them in my favorite white vase. It's been so fun watching everything come to life.

I also started testing a vodka sauce sourdough bread recipe this week. Even more exciting, I landed my first brand partnership on Instagram! A company reached out and asked me to create a reel featuring their vodka sauce, so stay tuned for that 😊

Oh, and I had a cute little visitor stop by this week... Mr. Groundhog was just hanging out on my deck one morning, making himself right at home πŸ˜‚

With summer in full swing, I thought it would be the perfect time to share a few of my favorite sweet and savory sourdough bread inclusions for the season.

I hope you give one (or all) of them a try and enjoy! ☺️

To help you get the best results, here are some ingredients and tools I recommend:

  • Food Scale - Measuring by weight is the easiest way to get consistent results every time.
  • Dutch Oven - Creates steam while baking so you get a beautiful rise and crust.
  • Straight-Sided Containers - Easier to track bulk fermentation.
  • Bread Sling - Helps you safely transfer dough into a hot Dutch oven.
  • Lame - Gives you control and confidence when scoring your dough for an even rise.
  • Proofer - Allows you to control the proofing temperature to better predict bulk fermentation timing.

The Sourdough Slice Serving sourdough recipes, stories, and inspiration every Saturday morning. Hey Reader, Picture this: It's 6 AM, I'm still half asleep, and I'm boiling water for my coffee. I turn the burner knob off and suddenly... ⚑POP⚑... a big blue spark of electricity shoots out of the back of my oven. Being absolutely terrified of fire, I immediately turned off the breaker and started panicking. There aren't many things more horrifying to a baker than having an oven suddenly go on...

The Sourdough Slice Serving sourdough recipes, stories, and inspiration every Saturday morning. Hey Reader, Do you bake bread to sell, or mostly just for fun and for your family to enjoy? I mostly bake for the blog, but lately I've been getting more requests from friends and neighbors to bake loaves for them. While I don't think I'd ever want it to become a full-time thing, it's been a lot of fun. I love seeing their faces light up when I hand them a fresh loaf. This week, one of my neighbors...

The Sourdough Slice Serving sourdough recipes, stories, and inspiration every Saturday morning. Hey Reader, It's a rainy and gray day here in Massachusetts today. But honestly, I'm grateful for it. I've been pretty busy this week between the garden, blog, and other fun summer activities, so having an excuse to relax on the couch today has been nice. Between all the cucumbers from my garden and my neighbor's, I ended up making 14 quart-sized jars of dill pickles and 3 quart-sized jars of bread...
